Change Information on Vehicle Registration in Indiana

Vehicle registration records in Indiana are administered by the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV), and updates to these records may be required after an address change, a legal name change, a correction to recorded information, a vehicle purchase or transfer, or a move into the state. Registration and title transactions are processed through BMV branches, BMV Connect kiosks, authorized service providers, and the myBMV online portal.

Indiana Vehicle Registration Changes that Commonly Require Action

A review of the registration record is warranted when any of the following events occur:

  • A physical or mailing address change. Two proofs of address are required when the legal address on a registration is amended.
  • A legal name change due to marriage, divorce, or court order. Documentation proving the name change must be presented, and a title amendment may be required before the registration can be updated.
  • The registration record contains incorrect information, such as a BMV error or a change in vehicle body style, color, or plate type.
  • A vehicle is purchased or acquired. Newly acquired, unregistered vehicles must be registered within 45 days of purchase or acquisition.
  • A vehicle is brought into Indiana as a new resident. Vehicles owned by a person must be registered within 60 days after becoming a new resident.
  • A license plate is transferred from a vehicle that has been sold or disposed of to a newly acquired vehicle.
  • A title document is lost, stolen, mutilated, destroyed, or illegible, requiring a duplicate title.

Where to File an Indiana Vehicle Registration Change

Routine registration and title changes are filed with the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles, which administers vehicle records statewide. Applications may be submitted in person at a BMV branch, at a BMV Connect kiosk, through a full or partial service provider, or online through the myBMV portal. Certain transactions, including amendments to a registration and changes to the legal address, must be completed at a branch.

Title amendments are handled through the same Bureau of Motor Vehicles, and the distinction between the registration record and the title record matters because owners must be added to or removed from the title before the registration record is updated.

Indiana Address Changes on Vehicle Registration

The Bureau of Motor Vehicles requires two proofs of address when the legal address on a certificate of registration is amended. Two proofs of address are required to amend the legal address on a certificate of registration, including both changes that involve a county change and those that do not. An address may also be updated during a registration or renewal transaction, and the mailing address on file may be updated through a myBMV account before a transaction is completed.

A change of residential address must also be reported when amending a driver's license or ID card, which requires a visit to a BMV branch within 30 days of the address change.

Indiana Name Changes and Title-Linked Corrections

A legal name change affects both the title record and the registration record. When the name on a registration changes due to marriage, divorce, or a court order, proper documentation of the name change must be provided. If the name change affects the registration expiration, the amending a title guidance describes how owners are added to or removed from a title, and the registration must be updated to reflect the new owners.

To add an owner to a title, an Application for Certificate of Title for a Vehicle (State Form 205) must be completed and returned to a license branch. To remove an owner, the owner whose name is being removed completes the seller information on the certificate of title, and the remaining owner applies for a new title. A name change on a driver's license or ID card must be reported to a BMV branch within 30 days.

Correcting Incorrect Information on an Indiana Registration Record

Correcting the registration record differs from correcting the title record. An amendment to a registration is used to update information that has changed or is incorrect, including a BMV error, a change in vehicle body style or color, a county change, a plate type change, or an expiration change. These amendments must be completed at a BMV branch.

If information on a certificate of title or certificate of origin contains errors, erasures, or alterations, an Affidavit for Certificate of Title Correction may be used. If the original title has been lost, stolen, mutilated, destroyed, or become illegible, an application for a duplicate title is required, with a fee of $15 plus $25 for a speed title.

Indiana Deadlines for Vehicle Registration Changes

The following deadlines apply to registration and title changes in Indiana:

  • Newly acquired, unregistered vehicles must be registered within 45 days after the date on which the vehicle was purchased or acquired.
  • Vehicles owned by a person must be registered within 60 days after that person becomes a new Indiana resident.
  • A change of residential address must be reported within 30 days when amending a driver's license or ID card.
  • Registrations must be renewed on or before the scheduled expiration date to avoid a $15 administrative penalty.
  • A vehicle may not be registered or operated in Indiana without financial responsibility under IC 9-25-4-1. The minimum liability coverage required is $25,000 for bodily injury to or death of one person, $50,000 for bodily injury to or death of two or more persons, and $25,000 for property damage, as stated in the BMV's proof of financial responsibility guidance.
